Four dead after bus ploughs into Moscow subway

Police said both passengers and passers-by were killed when the bus plunged into an underpass in a busy part of Moscow.

It is not clear if any of the people who died were inside the bus when it crashed.

At least four people have been killed and a further 15 injured in a terrifying bus crash in Russian Federation.

Russian authorities said the bus careened off a road and onto steps leading into an underground passageway in Moscow.

Police detained the bus driver, agencies said, as it is believed he had lost control of the vehicle.

Driver Viktor Tikhonov claimed his vehicle was trapped in gear as he tried to move the bus - and he couldn't help it careering down into the underpass.

Investigators said they were questioning witnesses and will examine vehicle documentation, and order medical examination of the driver.

At least ten others were taken to hospital after the accident, which happened near Slavyansky Bulvar metro station in the west of the city.

The underpass and surrounding area were cordoned off and several black body bags could be seen on the pavement, partially covered with falling snow.

Russian news agencies quoted Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin as saying he had ordered all city buses to be checked in the aftermath of the crash. Health officials said two of the injured were in a serious condition. "We are providing emergency aid".

Monday is a normal working day in Moscow, where the Orthodox Christmas will be celebrated on 7 January.
