Uncertainty swirls around Puigdemont investiture vote

Former president of Spain's Catalonia region has requested the parliament of the semi-autonomous territory to grant him immunity against an arrest warrant so that he can attend a session in which he could be reinstated as head of the regional government.

Madrid imposed direct rule on the Spanish region shortly after its declaration of independence. The lawyer did not rule out Puigdemont's attendance. Sergi Sabrià, spokesman for the Esquerra Republicana (ERC), coalition partner to Mr Puigdemont's party, welcomed the postponement as "a good decision to defend the votes of the people".

But Rajoy's conservative court challenged the Catalan parliament's decision to schedule Puigdemont's investiture vote for Tuesday at 3 pm (1400 GMT).

He then could, as his predecessors did, spend some time travelling the country in support of those ideas. A correction was immediately made and all but about a dozen tickets have been exchanged.


Delaying the investiture session "is one of the things that must be studied", a Catalan parliament source said.

Torrent says he will reconvene the session once Spanish authorities guarantee they "won't interfere" in the election of Puigdemont.

Carles Puigdemont is the only candidate for the new leader of Catalonia.

Speaking Tuesday on Spanish National Television hours before the parliament is scheduled to hold an investiture vote for Puigdemont, Rajoy said the parliament speaker will face legal consequences if he disobeys a Constitutional Court order saying Puigdemont can only be voted on if he is physically present and has previously obtained court permission.

The top-selling paper said several judges received calls insisting on the risks Puigdemont's return to power would pose.
