Ivanka Trump arrived to a red-carpet welcome in South Korea on Friday to attend this weekend's closing ceremony for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Trump said she was "very, very excited to attend the 2018 Winter Olympic Games".

For the opening, Kim Jong Un sent his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who was instantly dubbed by the local press "the Ivanka Trump of North Korea" because of her family connections and PR efforts.

Ivanka Trump was due to arrive in the South on a commercial flight from the U.S. on Friday afternoon, and have dinner with Moon at the Blue House.

The United States is due to announce its largest package of sanctions yet against North Korea as South Korea readies itself for more talks with the North's officials.

It emerged this week Pence was supposed to meet North Korean officials during his time in South Korea, but the meeting was called off by Pyongyang at the last minute. -North Korean dialogue as needed before he agrees to seeing Kim Jong-Un in Pyongyang.

"I say the United States of America doesn't stand with murderous dictatorships, we stand up to murderous dictatorships, and we will keep standing strong until North Korea stops threatening our country, our allies or until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missiles once and for all", Pence said, per Fox News.

South Korea's Unification Ministry acknowledged it was a hard decision to make - one that it chose to allow in the end because it hopes to use the Olympic closing ceremony as an opportunity to advance discussions for improving ties.

The vice president led the U.S. Delegation for Pyeongchang's opening ceremony while pushing the administration's "maximum pressure campaign" against North Korea, which included meeting with North Korean defectors, announcing new sanctions against the North, and bringing Fred Warmbier, Otto Warmbier's father as his guest. It defends the weapons programs as essential to deter USA aggression.

The eight-member delegation from North Korea is expected to stay for three days. Pence has been widely criticized for not at least saying "hi" to Kim's little sister, Kim Yo-Jong, at the opening ceremony two weeks ago and then at a dinner in the Blue House.

For now, there are no signs that Ivanka Trump will meet Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party Central Committee, who is to attend the closing ceremony.

But while the games appear to have paved a way for possible rapprochement between the two Koreas, U.S. and North Korean officials have yet to make direct contact.

Conservatives in both Washington and Seoul are questioning the wisdom of allowing Kim to attend the ceremony.
