TrueCar to cut ties with NRA in wake of Florida school shooting

The United States Constitution's Second Amendment protects the right of Americans to bear arms.

A gunman wielding an AR-15 rifle killed 17 people and wounded at least 14 others, drawing anguished calls for a ban on assault weapons from students and families.

Gun-control organizations Moms Demand Action and Everytown sent a letter Friday asking five companies - Google, Amazon, Apple, AT&T and Roku - to cease streaming NRATV, saying "it's time for tech leaders to acknowledge their role in helping the NRA spread this risky content".

"Chubb Ltd.: "Three months ago, Chubb provided notice of our intent to discontinue participation in the NRA Carry Guard insurance program under the terms of our contract", the insurer said in a statement".

The bank and vehicle rental company were used by the NRA to promote its membership through discounts and bonus deals.

Cybersecurity firm Symantec, which offered NRA discounts to its LifeLock identity theft protection service and Norton anti-virus software, told USA TODAY on Friday that it had "stopped its discount program with the National Rifle Association".

In addition, First National Bank of Omaha said Thursday it plans to end its business relationship with the organization, and would no longer offer NRA-branded credit cards.

None of those companies gave specific reasons for parting ways with the NRA, but their announcements came as the hashtag #BoycottNRA flooded social media.

Almost 50 schools including Yale, Dartmouth and UCLA have taken to social media to reassure the students.

The NRA's press release also says that the "loss of a discount will neither scare nor distract one single NRA member from our mission to stand and defend ... individual freedoms".

Activists have also called on public pension funds to divest from gun maker stocks. The money is placed in index funds, so Blackrock can not sell shares of individual companies within the index.

Late Friday, TrueCar, a vehicle buying service, said it will no longer offer discounts to NRA members starting Wednesday.

The NRA has not commented on the boycott movement, but NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre said in a political conference Thursday: "They want to make us all less free". Many of those tweeting are in the entertainment industry. Many users have asked tech giatns Amazon and Google to end streaming of NRATV.

Allied Van Lines said it "no longer has an affiliate relationship with the NRA effective immediately". "Doing business with the NRA is clearly bad business".

Dozens of colleges and universities have been telling students who face the threat of discipline at their high schools for participating in gun control protests that it won't affect their chances of winning a place.

President Donald Trump has aligned himself with the NRA, suggesting some teachers could be armed so that they could fire on any attacker.
