American Idol is back to sing another day.

The new season of American Idol kicked off Sunday night with contestants singing, hoping to make it to the next round. Catie Turner from Pennsylvania sings the judges an original song called "21st Century Machine", and wins them over with her unique perspective and strong sense of self. Of course, not everyone got in, including Cosby, a music theater performer who did not get that coveted ticket to Hollywood.

There were also multiple heartwrenching backstories: 22-year-old Ron Bultongez talked about coping with his abusive father.

Clearly stunned by what had just happened, Benjamin fell to the floor open-mouthed, as Katy celebrated by raising her arms in the air and getting high fives from Lionel and Luke. Indeed, one of the great joys of the show is looking back at contestants like Katharine McPhee and Carrie Underwood singing sans music before a dumbstruck Simon, Paula, and Randy.

South Jersey's Mara Justine, an Idol veteran who reached the finals in 2014, will appear in Monday's auditions episode.

Luke Bryan took his seat at the American Idol judge's table, and for two straight hours he doled out advice, praise and nine tickets to Hollywood to Idol hopefuls.

The auditions then head to Nashville, where we meet 16-year-old Harper Grace. And 16-year-old Harper Grace landed a well-deserved ticket to Hollywood after she confessed that she went viral at age 11 for a truly awful rendition of the national anthem.

"Once you're in front of the judges, it is very quick". She gets three yeses.

"Every once in a while, a Martian lands, and we happen to see the Martian", Richie said.

You can't keep Katy Perry off the dance floor.

In L.A., we see two polar opposites: sullen rocker Nico Bones and jolly farm boy Noah Davis. Noah, meanwhile, immediately wins them over with his sparkling personality and his unusual desire to own an alpaca. His rendition of Rihanna's "Stay" was so pure and moving that it brought tears, along with big hugs from all the panel.

Alyssa Raghu is only 15, but Katy Perry has already proclaimed her as "Top 10" for the season. "When we're not compassionate, we get emotional".

The worst contestant of the episode, 26-year-old Moscow-native Sardor Milano, claims he was the 2015 victor of X Factor: Russia.

Koby, a 26-year-old musical theater actress from Denver, CO, was also sent packing after her performance of "Never Stops" by Deerhunter. The Allen Stone song, "Unaware" could not have been more flawless. After the acid-tongued judge couldn't stop laughing at 18-year-old Jonathan Rey's weird rendition of Shakira's "The One", saying, "I think we're going to have to cancel this competition - that was awful", the teen walked up to the judges' table as if to shake hands, but instead picked up a cup of water to throw at Cowell. The reboot of the show pulled in a robust audience of 10.3 million viewers during its premiere on ABC Sunday night (March 11), Nielsen reports.
