'Daily Show' Comic, Davis Native Hasan Minhaj Scores New Show on Netflix

Transitioning from The Daily Show to Netflix this summer, Minhaj was Jon Stewart's final hire when he was hosting the late night Comedy Central news satire series.

News of the Netflix show comes on the heels of Minhaj's breakout year, which includes a celebrated if daunting turn as the emcee of the first White House Correspondents Dinner of the Trump era, followed by that hourlong Netflix special, Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King, praised for both its humor and its originality.

Minhaj said: 'I'm thrilled to be joining the Netflix family as the country braces for another election season.

While the show is yet to be named, Netflix said it has already committed to creating 32 episodes.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the comedian will be seen exploring the modern cultural and political landscapes with depth and sincerity.

Netlix announced that Davis native Hasan Minhaj will have his own talk show featured on the streaming service. "We are so excited to bring his new talk series to Netflix members around the world", added Bela Bajaria, vice president of content for Netflix.

Minhaj reportedly produced his own pilot, sparking a bidding war which was ultimately won by Netflix. "And more importantly, he isn't afraid to share his thoughtful voice and unique perspective", she was quoted as saying.

THR notes that the loss of Minhaj just as he was beginning to become a well-known quantity on the network is a setback for Comedy Central, which also recently lost contributor Michelle Wolf in pretty much the exact same way.

Fans can also catch Minhaj on an hour-long special titled Goatface to be released early next year. It follows the success of Minhaj's comedy special Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King which debuted on Netflix past year.
