It's what tennis players do.

Djokovic took six months off after Wimbledon previous year and returned in January's Australian Open where he lost in the fourth round.

Following his exit in Melbourne, it was the 12-time Grand Slam winner's first appearance at the 2018 BNP Paribas Open.

The former world No. 1 is making a cautious return to the ATP Tour after stopping his 2017 season following Wimbledon, due to a right elbow injury.

In other matches, fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem had to retire with an ankle injury while trailing Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 4-6, 2-4.

"To me, it's not that surprising".

Federer barely raised a sweat as he advanced on Monday, the evergreen 36-year-old blitzing Filip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-1.

The signing , which is a one-year, $2.25 million deal, cannot become official until the new league year begins on Wednesday. He played just five games last season, the first time he's ever missed fewer than 12 games in his 12-year career.

'I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all.

Kevin Anderson put on a serving masterclass as he saw off Nicolas Kicker 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-3).

Frenchman Gael Monfils survived a match point before beating big-serving American John Isner 6-7 (5) 7-6 (3) 7-5 in a contest that had only one break.

Chardy, who came into the all-French tussle with an unbeaten record against Mannarino from their three previous meetings, edged the opening set before the French No 2 hit back to force a decider and claim his first set against the 31-year-old. "He's only going to get better from here", concluded the world number one.

"It doesn't take very much to get that feeling back, but in the beginning it's very odd when you haven't played match plays".

Federer and 10th seed Djokovic both came into the tournament seeking to become the first six-time victor of the event.

"I was attacking when I had my chances and controlling most of the times the points", said Cilic. "Maybe it was because it was the first time he ever played against me". I am on a good run right now and I want to maintain that.
