"This signature design takes its cues from the original California Special, while enhancing the personality of today's Mustang".

"People have been talking a lot about the 2019 Mustang Bullitt", Ford spokesperson Jiyan Cadiz said. "This year further targets hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who want even more performance from BULLITT, while new technology including rev-matching on manual transmission equipped Mustang GTs and active valve performance exhaust on EcoBoost models means even more thrills".

The first Cali Special, introduced for 1968 as the Mustang GT/CS, was a dealer special inspired by a 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype.

The original version, pictured below, featured a blacked-out grille, fog lamps and self-proclaimed "over-the-top" racing stripes.

Education Secretary DeVos gives cringeworthy interview to '60 Minutes'
Asked point blank if cutting funds from struggling public schools would improve the schools, DeVos dodged. She proposes expansion of that system and has pushed for it in MI for decades.

Most recognizable of all its many visual tweaks is the California Special's fading black side stripes - a telltale fixture that's been a part of every GT/CS since the second-generation model from 2007-'09. The front of the vehicle wears the standard splitter from the 2018 Mustang GT Performance Pack 1. Inside, buyers will find suede-trimmed seats and multiple "GT/CS" badges.

Ford says the California Special Mustang will be available in a variety of vibrant-looking paint jobs including, crucially, the same Dark Highland Green that comes on the Bullitt.

Ford has announced that the legendary California Special package will return for the 2019 Mustang pony auto.
