Hadid also shared an announcement on Twitter following speculation of her split from the musician.

Malik called Hadid an incredible soul and explained that he was grateful for everyone that is respecting their decision.

Shortly after, Hadid posted a similarly harmonious statement saying she is, "forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons" she has shared with Malik, and that she continues to have respect and love for him.

"Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years ... not only in the relationship, but in life in general", she wrote. "I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend as that I have huge respect and love for". This could mean a number of things- maybe she is a busy person who just hasn't gotten around to it yet.

Zayn added: "We wish this news could have come from us first".

"They are no longer a couple but they do remain close and are supportive of each other".

After being absent from one another's social media accounts for about a month, they have confirmed they are no longer together.

This afternoon Zayn hinted at the split in an Instagram post.

The pair had been together since late 2015, which counts as an eternity in celebrity couple years - and thus hurts all the more.

Malik, the um, less poetic partner in the relationship, had this slightly more crude reaction to the breakup on Instagram: "When life throws you lemons, catch em so they don't hit you in the fucking face".

In January, Hadid's mother, Yolanda Hadid, fueled engagement rumors after she told Us Weekly that the decision to get married is up to the two.
