Nebraska's January jobless rate held steady at 2.9 percent

Compared to the third quarter 2017, the official unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 percentage points.

North Carolina's jobless picture has been above the national average most of the previous year.

The state reported that the number of people working in SC in January was again above 2.2 million.

The state says Iowa's unemployment rate remained steady at 2.9 percent in January.

Data released last week showed that despite the steady decline in unemployment the state was 32nd for private sector job growth during the 12-month period ending in September.

The number of people classified as unemployed declined to a seasonally adjusted 96,678, the lowest figure since February 2000.

The department says the January rate also remained well below the USA rate, which was unchanged at 4.1 percent.

Employment in Lawrence and Douglas County fell by almost 2,000 jobs in January as the local jobless rate rose four-tenths of a point to 3 percent. Many employers have said they're unable to add jobs because there is a lack of available talent with the right qualifications.

The Topeka area's jobless rate grew six-tenths of a point, to 3.7 percent while Wichita's jobless rate grew by three-tenths of a point to 3.9 percent. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2016, the official unemployment rate decreased with 0.8 percentage points.

In February, the USA economy added 313,000 new payroll jobs, the biggest single monthly increase since July 2016.
