Turkey-U.S. relations did not get any better during Tillerson's term as secretary of state.

President Donald Trump's shock Twitter announcement today that he's replacing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with Iran hard-liner Mike Pompeo immediately generated considerable backlash from advocates who fear that he could precipitate the president's threats to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal. Trump pointed out he did not discuss much with Tillerson regarding his decision to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Tillerson also reportedly called Trump a "moron" after a meeting of cabinet and national security officials last summer. Tillerson never denied using the word.

With Iran, Trump wanted out of the Iran deal, but Tillerson wanted the United States to stay the course.

Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn Mr Trump said: "It was a different mindset, a different thinking".

In fact, Trump is replacing a reasonably independent thinker with at least the potential to check his worst instincts with a much more political operator who looks eager to walk in lockstep with the White House. But it is not clear that Haspel has the same close relationship with Trump.

The president spoke to reporters at the White House shortly before departing for Joint Base Andrews for his trip to California.

For technical purposes, Tillerson said he would remain the Secretary of State till March 31 and till then he would delegate his responsibilities to the Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan.

Tillerson's removal is the latest in a long string of Trump administration departures. Together, the two were seen as a moderating influence on some of Trump's policies.

Trump said Gina Haspel, who was tapped as the CIA's deputy director just last month, will succeed Pompeo, becoming the first woman to be chosen for the role. "There's nobody to be a check and balance on Trump". Trump caused quite a controversy at a United Nations luncheon in September when he alluded to his friends getting rich in Africa, but in general, we haven't seen much of an economic strategy during his administration. "I made that decision by myself, Rex wasn't, as you know, in the country". One of them, Steven Golstein, was sacked later on Tuesday, after he contradicted the White House's version. She has gained respect from the foreign policy community which was initially skeptical of her qualifications as USA ambassador to the United Nations.

Former CIA Director John Brennan, who also served during the Obama administration, praised Haspel and said that she "deserves the chance to take the helm" at the CIA.

On the same day he jettisoned Tillerson, the president's personal assistant was escorted from the White House after his security clearance was revoked - and promptly was given a senior job with Trump's re-election campaign.

Tillerson, who was formerly the head of ExxonMobile, was appointed to the position of Secretary of State previous year, and he and the president have had numerous public disagreements.

Trump even tweeted, "I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man". He agreed with the UK's assessment that Russia was behind the attack against a former Russian spy in Salisbury, but the White House was unwilling to call out Russia.

Pompeo, a former Republican congressman from Kansas, has already been confirmed by the Senate for his current role at the Central Intelligence Agency, making it extremely likely that he will be confirmed for the State Department role.

Lawmakers from both major parties have criticized those cuts and the administration's failure to fill dozens of open jobs there. Rather than informing Comey in person or by phone, Trump sent his longtime bodyguard-turned-director of Oval Office operations Keith Schiller to the Justice Department to deliver a letter notifying the Federal Bureau of Investigation head he was done.

"I've talked to the president many, many times and I know Secretary Tillerson".

Several senior politicians said they would challenge her over torture, ensuring a likely heated debate when she goes up before the Senate Intelligence Committee for confirmation in the coming weeks. I guess he thought it was OK.
