National Security Council chief Chung Eui-Yong (left) shakes hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday. Beijing worries, however, that it will be marginalized from the diplomatic process that may soon get underway, making it hard to ensure that Chinese national interests are protected. Last year, Hirono wrote to Trump to urge him to fill the ambassadorship, and several other positions that are critical to finding a diplomatic solution to de-escalate tensions with North Korea.

South Korea will "deploy all possible means" to respond to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, the country's finance minister has said.
