Ken and Anne married on Friday 9 March, two weeks after Ken was discharged from Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital following six weeks of treatment for a severe chest infection.

He Wednesday Anne Jones, his partner of 40 years, on Friday and an announcement was due to go out later this week about the marriage.

"To my mind, he was one of the last music hall greats", said his publicist Robert Holmes. There is no one else that comes close.

And Guinness World Records reacted to the comedian's death, posting an entry from its 1974 book showcasing a "marathon session of joke cracking" from Sir Ken at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool. "He was a comedy legend and genius", he said. He asked Anne if she wanted to marry.

'He died two days later on Mother's Day. "Anne is obviously very upset".

He told the Daily Mail newspaper he enjoys going to church every week and he loves the quote, 'However black the clouds may be/In time they'll pass away/Have faith and trust and you will see/God's light make bright your day'.

But all 2018 dates had to be cancelled due to his illness and subsequent hospital stay. "It's absolutely incredible", Holmes said.

Those who worked with him also looked back with fondness.

"This time previous year I was by his side when he got his knighthood and he was so very proud then".

The Liverpudlian comedian was best known for long standup shows and "tickling stick". And comedian Dara O'Briain wrote: "Ah, Ken Dodd has died".

One called for fans to help get Sir Ken's single "Happiness" to the top of the charts.

The late comic was knighted in the 2017 New Year Honours for his services to entertainment and charity.

In 1989, Sir Ken faced a 23-day trial, charged with eight counts of tax fraud spanning 15 years and involving more than £800,000.

His first fiancee, Anita Boutin, died of a brain tumour in 1977 aged 45 after 24 years together.
