The Madras High Court had in November last year upheld a trial court order sentencing Natarajan and three others in the case registered 23 years ago.

She is lodged at the Bengaluru Parappana Agrahara prison after she was handed a four-year jail term in the Rs 66.6 crore disproportionate assets case. Later Natarajan was thrown out in 1996 for trying to dominate Jayalalithaa. Sasikala will be reaching there to attend the last rites of her husband.

VK Sasikala was married to Natarajan Maruthappa, a former government public relations officer for 33 years. During 1976-80, after Natarajan lost his job, Sasikala opened a video rental shop, which soon turned into a videography business. At that time Jayalalithaa was the Propaganda Secretary for AIADMK. He was the first person to introduce Sasikala to the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. If not for Natarajan, Jayalalithaa would not have remained in politics, says Tharasu Shyam, referring to her resignation letter, addressed to the assembly speaker, seized by the state police from Natarajan's residence.

He had a condition where his liver and kidney were failing and had a lung congestion.
