Eintracht Frankfurt boss Kovac, 46, will replace Heynckes next season after Bayern announced a three-year deal for the Croatian on Friday.

"It's a good choice".

After retiring Kovac was briefly an assistant coach in Austria and took over Croatia before signing with relegation-threatened Eintracht Frankfurt in 2016 and turning them into Champions League contenders this season.

Bayern did not reveal the cost of poaching Kovac, but both Bild and Sport Bild claimed that his departure before the end of his Frankfurt contract in 2019 would cost Bayern 2.2 million euros (S$3.6 million).

'Kovac generally makes a very positive impression, ' Heynckes said.

Frankfurt now lie in 6th place in the Bundesliga, five points away from Champions League qualification, with four games to go.

It his highly expected Unai Emery will stand down or be sacked at the end of the season following another disappointing Champions League campaign, and Tuchel had been heavily tipped for the job.

Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic blasted Bayern for not getting in touch beforehand, and for the timing of its announcement.

The Frankfurt coach said his move would have "no influence" on the team's remaining games of the season.

"It must be a day to celebrate for media and fans with so many highlights", said the 72-year-old coach of the 2018 German champion.

Frankfurt also has a German Cup semifinal match against Schalke next week.

The decision to appoint Kovac marks a change of approach for success-driven Bayern, who had previously opted for big-name coaches. He won over the players through tactical nous, commitment and by convincing them of the value of sacrifice for the team. "The players must know each other and respect each other".

Heynckes returned in an interim capacity - his fourth time in charge of Bayern, with the previous three reaping a Champions League title as well as four Bundesliga crowns and a DFB-Pokal - in October 2017 after Carlo Ancelotti was sacked.

Bayern' s latest coaching appointment has caused criticism from Frankfurt sports director Fredi Bobic who accused Munich of not acting entirely professionally.
