Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond wants him to remain in Glasgow but says the club would not stand in his way if Arsenal approached him.

But that hasn't stopped reports linking the former Liverpool and Swansea manager with a move to the Emirates, with the bookies pricing him as the favourite.

"I'm glad he's the favourite [with bookmakers]".

"Absolutely, it will be Brendan's decision (to leave) and Brendan's decision only".

Desmond says he would grant Rodgers permission to speak to Arsenal, but hopes he would stay at Celtic.

"He's an outstanding person and we wouldn't want him to leave but we can't force anyone to stay".

Wenger's announcement sparked a flurry of betting on a successor with the Hoops gaffer among the frontrunners alongside Patrick Vieira, Joachim Low and Carlo Ancelotti and Thomas Tuchel.

Wenger won three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups and seven Community Shields during his time in charge at Arsenal, also keeping the club in the Champions League for 20 successive seasons.

The Parkhead side released a news story on their website with the heading "Brendan Rodgers: I couldn't be happier as Celtic manager" around 10 minutes after news broke of Wenger's impending exit.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Nicholas said: "Arsene is the greatest achiever at Arsenal and I include the players in there".

"He has been an absolute treat for the football club, I don't know where we go to replace him, that is the hardest part".
