"For us, Mr Modi has to present the candidate to the voters as this will send a different message to them", said a senior leader, recalling that the last time Mr Modi addressed rallies, he coined two catchy phrases, "Ten percent sarkar" and Seeda Rupaiah (instead of Siddaramaiah) government" to drive home his charge that the Congress government in the state was corrupt. Pointing fingers at others while protecting its own was the character of the Congress party, he alleged.

The BJP had faced flak after its leaders in the Jammu region, including two ministers - Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga - in the Mehbooba Mufti government, joined the public protests against the police probe into the rape and murder case, which led to the arrest of eight persons.

In a video, Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Ghulam Ahmad Mir was seen suggesting that the real culprits in the case were being protected, and that the distrust of local residents in the investigation could not be ignored.

He also said that Congress' Ghulam Nabi Azad should apologise to the nation since the chief of Jammu Bar Association was the polling agent of Azad in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP leader also questioned Gandhi's candlelight march at India Gate on Friday night, saying he never protested against the "Nirbhaya" incident, atrocities against Dalits in Mirchpur in Haryana and many other incidents of rape that had happened during the Congress rule.

Addressing reporters, former Union Minister Kumari Selja also charged the Prime Minister with doing politics over the legacy of the Dalit icon. "You should immediately sack him (Mir)", Javadekar said.

Speaking on the matter, the general secretary of SC/ST the Employees Union of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Solanki claimed that they gathered at the venue to pay tributes even before the BJP leaders arrived. V R Sudarshan from Kolar and Prasanna Kumar from Pulakeshinagar here are said to be cozying up to BJP with the expectation of getting ticket from that party.
