President Donald Trump called the former director of the FBI, James Comey, a "proven leaker and liar" and a "weak and untruthful slime ball" in a Friday morning tweet, less than a day after the release of excerpts from Comey's upcoming book.

"I don't buy this stuff about him being mentally incompetent or early stages of dementia", Comey said of Trump, according to a transcript from ABC. Asked whether Comey was a man of integrity, the Republican speaker said: "As far as I know", but added that he did not know him well.

'I did not go into the business about- people peeing on each other, I just thought it was a weird enough experience for me to be talking to the incoming president of the United States about prostitutes in a hotel in Moscow. That's not a perspective, that's not a view, that's just a lie.

The media buzz around the interview and its Washington reverberations could also carry consequences. I can not say that. "My loyalty's supposed to be to the American people and to the institution", Mr Comey said in the interview.

As the plane neared Washington, Comey said he asked the pilots if he could sit with them in the cockpit because he wanted to watch them as they worked.

He said the salacious claims in the unverified Steele dossier, which was financed by the Clinton campaign, could be true.

"Our president must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country", Comey told ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

On Sunday, before the ABC interview aired, Comey tweeted that his book draws on stories from his life and from lessons he has learned from others.

He says he knows that's a "stunning" possibility and something that he never thought he'd say about a president of the United States.

Trump said Comey handled the probe "stupidly". He told ABC that he maybe should have said something to Trump at the time to indicate the request was inappropriate. Because I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump.

Mr Comey is now promoting his new tell-all book, A Higher Loyalty, which is reportedly very critical of Mr Trump.

He said his confusion grew when he began seeing headlines in which the White House claimed the FBI's reputation was "in tatters" and that the workforce had lost confidence in Comey, and was relieved that he had been fired.

Comey in the interview stood by the two decisions he made durint the campaign - first not to prosecute and then to re-open the investigation 10 days before the election, only to close it again just a day or two prior to the vote.

In attempt to blunt the impact of the new book, the Republican National Committee is waging a widespread campaign to undercut Comey's credibility, including a new website that dubs the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief as "Lyin' Comey".

Trump fired Comey in May 2017, setting off a scramble at the Justice Department that led to the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

Comey also reflected on the controversy over Hillary Clinton's personal email account.

'I hope not because I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they're duty bound to do directly, ' Comey said.

The president's attacks on Comey began even before the interview aired.

The interview did not appear to contain any significant new information relevant to the questions at the center of Mueller's investigation over alleged collusion between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation and whether the President obstruct justice.
