JD Wetherspoon quits social media following "trolling" of MPs

JD Wetherspoon has closed all of its social media channels, with the United Kingdom on-premise operator claiming that services such as Twitter and Facebook have become too addictive.

Outspoken founder and chairman, Tim Martin, claimed the move wouldn't harm his business at all.

The company has nearly 900 pubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland, many of which have individual social media accounts associated with them. He said that he does not believe that closing the accounts will have any affect on the business "whatsoever".

Data misuse and the perceived addictive nature of sharing, liking, posting and spouting nonsense on online platforms, was also apparently a reason for the move.

Mr Martin said: "I think generally I feel that in politics, and in business people vastly overestimate social media".

In the era of brands competing for attention and affection on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, one British company has done the unthinkable-it's quitting social media completely.

He told the BBC he had always thought the idea that social media was essential for advertising was untrue.

Martin said the decision was made because people spend too much time on social media "and struggle to control the compulsion". "We will also be maintaining our website and the Wetherspoon app and encourage customers to get in touch with us via our website or by speaking with the manager at their local pub", he said.

Wetherspoon has more than 44,000 Twitter followers and more than 100,000 followers on Facebook - which is not many considering how many of us have been known to flock through its doors (especially in that lean week before payday).
