"A pre-designed scenario is being implemented", Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said on Twitter. "We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences".

The overnight strikes hit three sites - one in Damascus and two in Homs - which US President Donald Trump said were "associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad".

"What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"

Following the USA -led strikes, however, "we consider it possible to return to examination of this issue not only in regard to Syria but to other countries as well", Rudskoi said.
