The Egyptian has fired Liverpool into the Champions League semi-finals and is the Premier League's top scorer.

He added: "I said I would wait to see what happened in Liverpool's Champions League game with Manchester City before I hung my hat on Salah or Kevin De Bruyne for that award".

"Salah deserves to be crowned Footballer of the Year and to carry off the Premier League's Golden Boot but a bigger picture has emerged that is more important than all of that now".

Salah's 40th was also his 30th in the league this season. I don't care about the rest. Victory for Liverpool was another blow to Chelsea's hopes of Champions League football next season.

Thirty of those have come in the Premier League, leaving him out in front in the race to win the Golden Boot, but the accolades will count for little unless Salah gets his hands on the big prize next month - the Champions League trophy.

That is just one of a welter of statistical feats that have led some to rank City among the Premier League's greatest ever teams. I wish them all the success in the Champions League because it would be fantastic for an English club to go and win.

With two inexperienced full-backs in Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, you'd be forgiven for thinking Liverpool could be hurt out wide - but they both has magnificent games while Alexander-Arnold grabbed an assist.

For all Liverpool's dominance, they only had one goal to show for it in the first half as Salah continued to be frustrated, with Steve Cook's brilliant challenge denying him.

Salah has enjoyed an incredible debut season at Liverpool in the league and the European competition. It (Rush's record) is also very close, it's just seven goals. I can not lie - it is in my mind. "But you can see with the team, everyone tries to pass the ball to me to help me", he said.

"It is a great feeling, of course it is a great feeling, but in the end I am just happy to score and help the team", the Egypt global told reporters. You feel they want to support you and want to help you to score goals. And what a number we scored as a team in the whole season, that's insane.

Salah displayed ice-cool composure to lift the ball over City goalkeeper Ederson and grab a vital equaliser and away goal in the Reds' 2-1 second-leg win at Etihad Stadium last week.
