Seven dead after fights at SC maximum security prison

Multiple fights at one of South Carolina's most unsafe prisons left at least seven dead and 17 others injured, a prison official said Monday.

"How else are you going to die in prison?"

Logan said he just finished identifying all the dead Monday and is working to notify relatives.

Additional details stating the cause of the fight have yet to be released.

The department of corrections says all law enforcement officers who responded to the prison are safe and accounted for. The local coroner's office also responded.

But until this weekend, they have refrained from targeting Assad's government, apart from a volley of U.S. missiles past year . Russian and Iranian military help over the past three years has allowed Assad to crush the rebel threat to topple him.


South Carolina's governor is expressing support for his state prisons chief following riots at a maximum-security prison that killed seven inmates.

"If everybody has an uprising, you are always going to be understaffed", Logan said.

Twelve inmates were killed by other prisoners in SC in 2017, according to public documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request filed by Steve Bailey, who writes columns for The Post and Courier of Charleston.

Lee is a maximum-security prison that houses 1,600 inmates, including some of the state's most violent offenders, reports the State.

The 250 inmates taken to the hospital after assaults the past two years were almost double the rate from the two years before, the newspaper reported.

A two-day riot and hostage-taking at the New Mexico State Prison in 1980 left 33 inmates dead and 200 injured, one of the worst in modern U.S. history.
