Suspect in shooting of police officer faces arraignment

A Yarmouth police officer who was shot in the head while serving a warrant in the town of Barnstable, Mass. has died from his injuries at Cape Cod Hospital.

State police spokesman Dave Procopio confirmed to The Related Press that an officer was shot. The Cape Cod Times reported that in addition to a SWAT team showing up, ATF agents also arrived on the scene. "We are also praying to get the restoration of Officer Gannon's K9 partner, that was also injured in the current tragic incident".

Peter McClelland, a retired Yarmouth police officer who served in the K-9 unit, was with Nero throughout the night, according to the post.

Items found belonged to missing Southern California family
The family - two parents and two children - was traveling to San Jose last week when they stopped communicating with relatives. The four have been identified as 42-year-old Sandeep, 38-year-old Soumya, 12-year-old Siddhanty and 9-year-old Saachi.

The suspect in the shooting, later identified as Latanowich, was taken into custody after a standoff following the shooting, the Cape Cod Times reported.

The suspect had been barricaded in the home for hours before finally surrendering to law enforcement. The 29-year-old has a long history with law enforcement, with more than 100 offenses on his record, Boston 25 reports, including violent crimes and drug trafficking.

The officer's K9 partner also suffered from what appeared to be a gunshot wound, Massachusetts State Police told a reporter from the outlet, and the animal was brought to a veterinarian.

"MA is lucky to have courageous men & females who set their own lives on the line to safeguard our communities daily", he continued.

Gannon had been with the Yarmouth Police department for 8 years.
