Rock Hall board chairman Chris Connor also spoke about the renovations and thanked the NY board for its support.

The Cars have pulled into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Democratic governor hailed the band as "one of the most famous, enduring rock bands of all time". "I am considering doing one of the new songs and that is something that's just not done".

Orr died in 2000, but each of the band members acknowledged his impact, with lead singer Ric Ocasek saying "it feels odd being up here without him". It was great to see Link Wray finally getting recognition in some capacity at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bon Jovi, who have sold more than 120 million albums and launched multiple No. 1 hits, was first nominated in 2011.

Led by Sayreville native Jon Bon Jovi, the band released its first album in 1984 and has recorded classic rock anthems including "You Give Love A Bad Name", "Livin' On A Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive".

The 33rd annual Rock Hall four-hour plus ceremony kicked off with a tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October at age 66. This year marked the band's third nomination; Flowers will induct the band. The Killers earned a loud applause from the audience when they started performing "American Girl", then transitioning to "Free Fallin'".

A live stream of the ceremony's red carpet will be viewable at the Rock Hall's Facebook page, YouTube channel and official website starting at 5:30 p.m. ET.

The Rock Hall induction was expected to include all the original members of the band, including guitarist Richie Sambora, bassist Alec John Such, keyboardist (and Tony Award victor David Bryan), and drummer Tico Torres. She will be inducted by Brittany Howard, of blues rock band Alabama Shakes.

Alan Clark of Dire Straits laughed in the bottom level food court as he spoke about how he claimed that he, bassist John Illsley and keyboardist Guy Fletcher would play an acoustic version of the epic "Telegraph Road" in the absence of frontman Mark Knopfler - and that it was taken seriously.
