A MIURDER inquiry is under way into the death of a 14-year-old girl after her body was found in a derelict farmhouse in Co Dublin.

Later that evening Supt John Gordon released a statement saying that a body was discovered in a "disused, vacant farmhouse on the Clonee Road in Lucan".

The senior officer appealed for members of the public, who were near St Catherine's Park or the Clonee Road at 5pm on Monday to contact investigating officers at Lucan garda station.

At 6pm, State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy arrived at the scene to conduct a preliminary examination of Ana's body.

Detectives believe the remains are those of missing Anastasia (Ana) Kriegel.

Kriegel was a first year student in Confey secondary school, a co-ed Community College in Leixlip, County Kildare.

"We are deeply saddened by Anastasia's death".

However a murder investigation is underway and gardai are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Gardai are trying to establish if this person was with the schoolgirl in St Catherine's Park, Lucan, when she was last seen alive. Not communicating with her family was out of character entirely.

"They have another child in that house as well so they have to be very careful around that", Supt Gordon added. "But that's part of the investigation".

During the searching the Garda Water Unit, including divers, had been drafted in to search parts of the nearby River Liffey and Royal Canal.

The scene is now being preserved, pending a full Garda technical examination, with the body now at the scene.
