A 19-year-old former Dixon High student recently expelled from the school is in custody and being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder after bringing a gun to the school this morning, officials said.

UPDATE: 11:53 a.m. EDT-The shooting at Dixon High School in IL took place on Wednesday morning inside the school's gym, where students were gathered to practice for graduation, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing City Manager Danny Langloss. He says neither the officer nor anyone else was injured. "When shots rang out through the hallway of the school, he charged toward the suspect and confronted him head-on and because of this heroic action, countless lives were saved".

According to the city of Dixon website, the school resource officer position was started by the Dixon Police Department in 2000 to help prevent school violence.

Neither the suspect's name nor the name of the officer who shot the suspect was released. The school resource officer pursued the subject.

The suspect, a former Dixon High student, left the school when the officer confronted him, and ran, Howell said. Dixon Mayor Liandro Arellanno Jr. expressed gratitude for the outcome and praised the officer.

Dixon High has been evacuated, and all Dixon schools are on lockdown while the investigation proceeds.
