During an appearance on Fox News Tuesday night, Lewandowski responded "womp, womp" when fellow panelist Zac Petkanas shared the account he had read, CNN reports.

"Womp womp", Lewandowski interrupted, as if he just learned someone's ice cream fell off their cone, splattering on the ground.

A former campaign manager for Donald Trump has created a stir by dismissing a story about a girl with Down syndrome with a sarcastic "Wah wah".

Lewandowski didn't want to hear it, speaking over Petkanas to say "womp womp". Petkanas asked incredulously. "How dare you!".

He said the girl and her brother went to a facility in McAllen, Texas, while her mother was sent to a different centre, an hour away.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, left, shakes hands with Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Videgaray during a photo opportunity at their joint press conference in Mexico City, Monday, March 26, 2018.

He described recent cases involving Mexican children, including a 10-year-old Mexican girl with Down syndrome who last week was separated from her mother after they crossed the border. Their father, a legal USA resident, is working with the United States consulate to get the girl released.

When tempers cooled slightly, Lewandowski tried to claim that Trump's family separation policy was actually the same policy carried out by the Barack Obama administration.

NBC host Megyn Kelly also weighed in with a tweet, adding, "There is no low to which this coward Corey Lewandowski won't sink".
