This was the first time England had scored five goals in a World Cup match.

Roman Torres (left), the 6ft 3in tatooed Panama defender, is on a mission to stop Harry Kane (right) and England in their tracks when the two teams meet today.

For England fans, the pain of losing to Iceland in the 2016 European Championships and a first-round exit without a win at the 2014 World Cup, was finally slipping away.

Kane became the third England player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup game following Geoff Hurst in the 1966 final and Gary Lineker against Poland in the 1986 tournament. There was never any real possibility that Panama would cause an upset, but seeing England score five goals in one half will have been the most enjoyable experience watching England that many fans have ever had. Portugal, oddly, scored only one goal in the first half and six in the second - and then did not score again for the rest of the tournament, knocked out in the round of 16 by Spain.

Australia won the match 30-12 and have been victorious in 18 of the other 25 Tests they have played at the venue . He started on the bench in the first test loss in Brisbane but was not involved in the win in Melbourne.

England goes into the Group G finale against Belgium level on points and with the same goal difference after conceding a late goal against Panama, which was eliminated after two matches in its World Cup debut. They emulated the feat of Germany's Ottmar Walter and Fritz Walter, brothers incidentally, who scored two goals each during their team's 6-1 win during the 1954 semi-final over Austria.

Yugoslavia failed to score in their group-stage opener against Brazil and then responded with six goals in the first half against Zaire, who, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo, made their only World Cup appearance to date.

Kane made it five just before the break after he had been wrestled to the ground.

"First time in a long time since we've seen a hat-trick from England player in the World Cup, absolutely delighted for Harry and the team", tweeted Hurst. Roger Milla of Cameroon was 38 years, 25 days old when he scored a brace against Romania in a 2-1 group stage win at the 1990 World Cup, while Sweden's Gunnar Gren was 37 years, 236 days old when he scored in his country's 3-1 win over Germany in the 1958 semifinal in Gothenburg.
