The state has about 400 service members on the border, helping support border security while not actively enforcing immigration law.

Cruz, a frequent ally of President Trump, introduced what he called "emergency legislation" to stop the practice of children being separated from their parents.

House Republican Mario Diaz-Balart said the priority of ending the separations has been slotted into a compromise bill now under consideration and favored by GOP moderates.

Why are these bills being called on Thursday?

"Tomorrow the House will vote on legislation to keep families together", Ryan told reporters on Wednesday. That petition drive was nearly successful, falling only two signatures short.

All the Illinois House Democrats signed the petition to get a vote on a Dreamer bill. "Our politics are badly broken", Schmidt said.

Just hours after doubling down on his administration's much-derided policy that triggers separations of migrant children from their parents, Trump braved frustrated and in some cases angry fellow Republicans to assure he wanted their swift resolution to the crisis. It came as the Trump Administration doubled down this week on its "zero-tolerance" policy for illegal border crossers, arresting parents and taking more than 2,300 children to shelters over a recent six-week stretch.

Others did not go that far.

McConnell pointed to the fairly clear consensus that families should no longer be separated at the border. "I want border security". House Democrats are working on what could become a companion bill to Feinstein's.

The Democratic challengers - Sean Casten v. Roskam; Lauren Underwood v. Hultgren and Brendan Kelly v. Bost all are using the child separation issue.

"These are crippling loopholes that cause family separation, which we don't want", Trump said.

The clash between Trump and congressional Republicans makes it increasingly likely that Republicans will need to work with Democrats if they want to pass a bill that could overcome a presidential veto. "I don't want people coming in". It would also make it more hard for immigrants to claim asylum, and, if a child does not have a "legitimate asylum claim", arrange for "the safe and expeditious return" to the child's home country.

The prospect of passing legislation on family separations is no better in the House. "This specific travesty erodes our core values as Americans and human beings".

"Mr. President, have a heart for a change", she said.

If a solution is reached, it is unclear what vessel it would take to be passed. "It's our hope that this House will show leadership and be an example to the rest of the country that we can address many of these problems that have been facing our country for decades".
