Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday slammed the Congress for not keep its promises on rural electrification during all the years it was in government. He said about 14,500 villages out of 18,000 villages not electrified were in Eastern India and government have changed that.

Modi said that it was hard to electrify the last 18000 villages, as most were in remote areas, hilly areas and areas with poor connectivity. They told Modi that earlier, due to no electricity in their village, no one would marry off their daughters there and that they had to travel for kilometres for just getting wheat ground.

The Prime Minister said 28th of April this year was a historic day for India's development story as Leisang village of Manipur became the last village in the country to be connected to a power grid. "This was quite unfortunate", Modi said. Mr Modi reminded that in 2005, then government had promised to electrify every village by 2009. The then President of the ruling party went a step ahead and said we will bring electricity to every home. Needless to say, none of that happened during their long tenure. "Eastern India can play an even bigger role in India's development journey", he added.
