Following what's been described as a "courtesy" meeting with Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn and the director, the studio is staying firm on its decision to fire Gunn after a series of old tweets, including ones that saw him joke about rape and pedophilia, re-emerged online. Almost one month since he was sacked from the movie due to the discovery of historic offensive joke tweets, it's final: we won't be getting a third Guardians film from Gunn.

Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt recently admitted "it's not been an easy time" for the Guardians of the Galaxy cast since Gunn's firing. Though most everyone agreed that the tweets were incredibly terrible, fans and friends came to Gunn's defense because he had not only addressed and apologized for the tweets years earlier, but the individual who unsurfaced those tweets is a right-wing conspiracy theorist who publicized the tweets specifically to target Gunn (though the individual has his own history of rape tweets that weren't meant as jokes).

Gunn and his UTA reps pushed hard for him to be given a second chance, and Horn chose to take a courtesy meeting on Tuesday to clear the air and see if there was a possibility of Gunn returning to the franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Will Disney reinstate James Gunn

This has undoubtedly been the biggest story of the year so far, James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was sacked by Disney.

After weeks of anticipation, an open letter from the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, hundreds of thousands of vocal fans and fellow celebrities expressing support, and rumblings that James Gunn might be hired back by Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, all hopes for the director's return to the franchise are now gone.

Reps for Disney, Marvel, and Gunn did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reportedly agrees with Horn's decision, but was unable to attend the meeting. The movie is expected to still use Gunn's script, though there are a lot of moving pieces and Disney has made no official statement yet. That said, there is still no confirmation from Disney regarding the script, and with no director attached, much could change.
