Social media awash with tributes for 'Queen of Soul' Aretha Franklin

LaBelle has not commented on the mix-up, but she posted a touching tribute to Franklin earlier Thursday.

The statement continued: 'Franklin's official cause of death was due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin's oncologist, Dr Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. "We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin's family and friends", the network said in a statement. A then-22-year-old Eric Clapton played on her stunning 1967 track, "Good to Me As I Am to You," while a young Duane Allman famously lent his talents to a number of Franklin recordings in the late Sixties.

The 18-time Grammy award victor inspired multiple singers during her five-decade career from pop diva Mariah Carey and the late Whitney Houston, to Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Mary J Blige and the late Amy Winehouse.

Franklin was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

The Museum will also have a guest book available to sign, which will be sent to Aretha's family. "She was a national treasure to be cherished by every generation throughout the world".

"Salute to the Queen". I was fortunate enough to spend time with her and witness her last performance - a benefit for the Elton John Aids Foundation at St John The Divine Cathedral.

Beatles star Paul McCartney gave thanks for Franklin and her work.

The Queen of Soul has sung at the inaugurations of three American Presidents: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

The Queen of Soul remained a prominent face - and voice - for African American civil rights throughout her life.
