The new platform is called Storefronts and contains a collection of over one million products from almost 20,000 businesses. The new landing page will also profile different sellers through featured videos and stories, as well as a new national TV campaign.

Amazon is thinking small for a change. The brand claims that half of everything sold on the site is from a small or medium-sized business, though it hasn't defined what constitutes "small" or "medium". Showcasing small and medium-sized businesses via its new portal could attract more of those companies to the Amazon seller platform-meaning Amazon makes more cash.

The company launched "Amazon Storefronts", on Monday, an online store featuring only products from US mid-size businesses. But the new portal also allows Amazon to be able to say it's supporting small businesses in the USA instead of just decimating their customer base by undercutting them on price.

To support the launch of Storefronts, Amazon is also debuting its first-ever national television commercial, featuring real businesses that sell on Amazon and showing how they get their products to customers all over the world.

Amazon's aggressive strategy for expanding its business offerings has had an effect on some competitors in service sectors it has entered. Minnery said he started selling his toys on Amazon Handmade about two years ago and was asked by Amazon to join Storefronts. In 2017, more than 300,000 US -based small and medium-sized businesses started selling on Amazon. Kicking off the site's launch is The Little Flower Soap Co., which sells handmade soap from MI.

If more small businesses can get involved with Storefronts, there's even more of a possibility for customers to get an intimate buying experience without leaving the Amazon platform. Since they started selling their products on Amazon (amzn) in October 2016, the company's sales have almost doubled, said Holly Rutt, co-founder of Little Flower Soap Co.

Being part of Amazon Storefronts has positives and negatives for participants. At this time, it's not clear whether Amazon will add more small businesses to the Storefronts section.

Amazon also plans to use Storefronts to highlight specific small businesses and their individual owners.
