State-run Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan as saying Turkey wished a "result that allows us to reach an opinion" as to what happened to the journalist. Investigators said the search will take place Wednesday, according to state broadcaster TRT. Turkish officials fear Saudi officials killed and dismembered the writer inside the mission.

Khashoggi has been missing since October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Turkish officials have not said if any significant evidence was found.

Turkish investigators had been poised to enter the consulate for days, however the Saudis rescinded their offer of cooperation after the identities of a "hit squad" of 15 Saudis suspected of being involved in Khashoggi's murder were leaked to the press.

Pompeo will fly to Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

Pompeo arrived at a royal palace in Riyadh on Tuesday.

Pompeo responded: "Thank you for accepting my visit on behalf of President (Donald) Trump".

Following his writing ban, Khashoggi left the kingdom, joining the Washington Post as a columnist and living between the U.S. capital and Istanbul.

A report by CNN quoted two sources as saying that the Saudi side is preparing a report to acknowledge that the interrogation of Khashoggi had been meant to abduct him from Turkey, but went wrong and lead to his death. There has been no evidence to substantiate Khashoggi had such ties. Saudi Arabia has previously insisted he left the building alive, but Cengiz says she never saw him again.

Actor Gerard Butler said on Monday he canceled an upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia to promote a new film because it felt like an "incredibly insensitive" time to visit amid activist Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance.

Earlier, a joint Saudi-Turkish team entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to search it.

It is unclear whether a Saudi statement would be released, and its content hasn't been completed, the people familiar with the matter said.

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks with King Salman over the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as reports emerged that Riyadh was poised to acknowledge that Khashoggi was killed in its consulate in Istanbul.

On Oct. 2, Khashoggi went to the consulate general of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul for some documents.

The telephonic talks between Trump and King Salman is being seen as an attempt by the Saudi ruler to defuse tension apparently caused by the 33-year-old Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

On Monday, President Trump said he spoke to the king of Saudi Arabia, who denies any knowledge of what happened to the Saudi journalist.

Pompeo was in the air when a Turkish police forensics team wrapped up its hourslong search of the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul early Tuesday morning. The Turkish official would not comment on the disposal method for the body.

Murphy and Graham were among 20 Senate Foreign Relations Committee members who support imposing sanctions against those responsible, including the highest-ranking officials in the government of Saudi Arabia.

The statement would pin blame on intelligence officials rather than Saudi leaders, alleging that an interrogation attempt had gone wrong and Khashoggi, who is a US resident and an opinion writer at the Washington Post, was killed without authorization.
