The destructive Camp Fire has already burned over 18,000 acres of Butte County, Northern California as of Thursday afternoon, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

"This event was the worst-case scenario".

In the first official report of fatalities, the Butte County Sheriff tweeted on Friday that investigators had found five dead bodies. "Regrettably, not everybody made it out".

He's safe now, but at least five people were killed in vehicles - their bodies burned so badly they could not be immediately identified.

Dozens of other people were reported missing. By nightfall, the fire had expanded in size to 70,000 acres, and was just 5 percent contained.

A Chico County police officer called in to "Shepard Smith Reporting" Friday to describe the devastation a deadly, fast-moving wildfire has caused in the town of Paradise, California.

6,453 of those structures were residences, 260 were commercial buildings.

Two blazes were raging last night - one in the north of the state, another west of Los Angeles near Thousand Oaks, the site of a mass shooting earlier this week.

Also burning farther west in Ventura County was the Hill Fire, which fire officials said burned almost 4,050 hectares by Thursday night. Authorities shut down the 101 Freeway in both directions at Camarillo Springs Road. Traffic accidents turned roads into gridlock and residents abandoned vehicles and ran from the flames carrying children and pets, officials said.
