Sabathia, who will turn 39 next July, had expressed a desire to pitch again in 2019 after going 9-7 with a 3.65 ERA, his lowest in six years, in 2018, although not necessarily for the Yankees.

He is 246-153 in 18 major league seasons with a 3.70 ERA and 2,986 strikeouts, including 129-80 in a decade with the Yankees.

With two AL Cy Young awards and four top-three finishes in the last five years, Kluber is the best of the bunch and might cost NY the most in terms of assets.

After paying luxury tax for 15 straight years, a total of $341 million, the Yankees dropped below the threshold for the first time in 2018, when Boston took over as baseball's biggest spender for the first time since records began in the free-agent era.

"He's been a great Yankee, and he has time on the clock still", Cashman said. Trust me. I think he's a heck of a pitcher.

Needless to say, Cashman and Co. recognize that starting pitching is a major need fresh off a 100-win season that saw NY put up historic numbers on offense.

Only Severino and Tanaka are due back, and Cashman is expected to pursue a group of free-agent pitchers that also include left-handers Patrick Corbin and Dallas Keuchel. After that, Sonny Gray is likely to be traded soon. NY went 100-62 and finished eight games behind the world champion Red Sox in the AL East.
