Microsoft Acquires ‘The Bard’s Tale’ Developer inXile Entertainment

They're most recently known for their Kickstarter-backed rekindling of the long-dormant Wasteland and Torment series, with a third entry in the series on the way after another successful round of crowdfunding.

Obsidian Entertainment specialises in RPGs, with its current RPG being Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. The same holds true for Obsidian Entertainment, and despite the common heritage both studios share, they will remain free to choose their own creative destiny.

Some of the most likely reasons for Microsoft picking up both of these studios is to add more titles to Xbox Game Pass and continue to support services similar to that in the future.

Officially announced during the X018 celebration event, Obsidian Entertainment was the latest studio to join the Microsoft family - despite their rocky past.

When the company made the announcement, they revealed just how important both the inclusion of Obsidian and Wasteland's inXile was to the company. He said the team intends to carry on making role-playing games.

"As one of the industry's premiere RPG developers, we couldn't be more excited about the opportunity to add their expertise to Microsoft Studios, while enabling the studio to preserve its unique culture and build on its talent and vision to fully realize their creative ambitions", Microsoft said in a statement. The developer of Pillars of Eternity and many other titles had been rumored to be acquired recently.

Obsidian and inXile are not the first studios to have been acquired by Microsoft Studios this year. Like they've been espousing all along, Obsidian will allegedly be allowed to operate autonomously through this agreement.
