Keane has made the England squad for their next two matches, both at Wembley, against the United States in a friendly on Thursday, and Croatia in the Nations League on Sunday.

"There were a few months when things were going really badly and I did not really want to go and do things out of the house", he said after he return to the England set-up.

"It's something different. I'm not asking people to agree with it, but it is important that there is money raised for the Wayne Rooney Foundation", he added.

While Keane went through a tough spell, he insists he used his experiences as a character-building exercise after overcoming a hairline fracture to the skull earlier this season.

'But Bill told me how much he believed in me and to keep working hard and that he had faith that I could become one of the greats of the club'.

'That gets to you and makes you feel guilty and want to make sure it does not happen again.

Fans have lashed out at Strictly Come Dancing over tonight's result
After landing bottom of the judges' scores, Amy admitted to Zoe that being in the dance off "didn't come as a shock". The first 10 of the series and my first 10 for our jive is a moment I'll never forget! I am more than happy.

Speaking to reporters from England's St. George's Park training base on Tuesday, the current D.C. United striker believes this will be the flawless chance for him to say goodbye and he will wear the captains armband with pride if the opportunity arrives.

Whatever your stance on Rooney's return to action for England and whether or not it diminishes the value of a cap or this friendly altogether, you can't argue that he doesn't deserve a special sendoff.

After a season back at Everton, former Manchester United striker Rooney secured a move to the U.S.to join D.C. United - whom he helped to the playoffs in his first campaign.

He was also singled out as an under-performer after a big money move from Burnley last summer and, after working to get back to his best, he explained how hard things became at times. So it was brilliant to have him around.

"I could see the younger players and I felt it was the right time for me to stop playing and for younger lads to step in and be given that opportunity". So I've been lucky enough to play quite a lot with him, and see what a great player and great person he is. "And I'm going to enjoy Thursday". "As a country we haven't done anything like this before but I hope that in 10-15 years' time we're doing it for someone like Harry Kane, who could go on to get the goalscoring record".

"Wayne is definitely one of them". Personally I didn't think it was right to get in the way of that.
