The Texas native and former Exxon Mobil CEO didn't stop there. "And if that's what you want to do, there's nothing wrong with that".

Tillerson, who was sacked in March, made no attempt to deny his poor relationship with Trump during a rare interview Thursday night as part of a charity dinner in his native Texas.

That less-than-stellar job review, first reported by the Houston Chronicle, earned a quick rebuke on Friday from Trump. "But rather just kind of says, 'Look, this is what I believe and you can try to convince me otherwise, ' but most of the time you're not going to do that", Tillerson said.

His candid remarks about his former boss came almost nine months after he was sacked by Trump in March and replaced with then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo. He said Tillerson "didn't have the mental capacity needed for the job" while praising Tillerson's replacement, Mike Pompeo. "He was lazy as hell".

Nine months after Mr Trump summarily dismissed his top diplomat by tweet, Mr Trump and Mr Tillerson were back to bickering as they traded accusations in a relationship that at turns has been icy and blistering. The NBC report also said that after the speech Tillerson called Trump a "moron".

"We did not have a common value system", Tillerson told veteran journalist Bob Schieffer of CBS News, which broadcast an excerpt on Friday.

"If our leaders seek to hide the truth or we as people become accepting of alternative realities that are no longer grounded in facts, then we as American citizens are on a pathway to relinquishing our freedom", he said at the time.

He went on to add, "He got really frustrated".

"I'd say, 'Here's what we can do, '" Mr Tillerson said.

The former secretary of state also said he felt Trump acted on his instincts.

"I'd have to say to him, 'Well Mr. President, I understand what you want to do, but you can't do it that way".

"We can go back to Congress and get this law changed", Tillerson said he told Trump. It troubles me that the American people seem to want to know so little about issues that they are satisfied with 128 characters.
