Trump declares national day of mourning for George HW Bush

McCain's memorial services - which culminated with a funeral at Washington's Washington National Cathedral attended by heads of state, military brass and other elites - amounted to an extraordinary repudiation of Trump's presidency and a melancholy last hurrah for all that had been lost in the Trump era.

PM Modi, who is now in Argentina to attend the G-20 summit, expressed condolence on the death of the former U.S. president. His wife Barbara died on on April 17-one day after her funeral, Bush was hospitalized with an infection that had spread to his blood.

A bicameral arrival ceremony will be held for President Bush on Monday, December 3 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

President Trump, in typically Trumpian fashion, shared both a formal prepared statement and an off-the-cuff tweet on the subject, lauding Bush's "long, successful and handsome life" (?) in the latter. "While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude", said former President Obama.

He was ahead on two of the judges' cards and tied on the third when he was abruptly stopped. He suffered a serious head injury.


The proclamation hails Bush as "one of America's greatest points of light", a reference to one of the former leader's signature phrases about the impact of American civic culture. "'Putting America First" we understand. Would be the same old thing (remember "read my lips, no more taxes").

He added, "President Bush always found a way to set the bar higher".

"And through all that he accomplished, he remained humble, following the quiet call to service that gave him a clear sense of direction".

"Not merely for the years he spent as our 41st President, but for the more than 70 years he spent in devoted service to the country he loved - from a decorated Naval aviator who almost gave his life in World War II, to Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces".
