In a speech marking the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Tehran, Rouhani said: "47 years ago, which is seven years before the Islamic Revolution during the reign of the traitor Pahlavi regime, an important part of southern Iran separated, and we have read that geographically it was a part of Iran, and its 14th province".

Trump said he envisioned keeping USA troops in Iraq "because I want to be able to watch Iran" during an interview with Margaret Brennan of CBS News that aired February 3.

On February 11, 1979, Iran's army declared its neutrality in the dispute between the two sides.

State TV showed crowds defying cold rainy weather and carrying Iranian flags while shouting "Death to Israel, Death to America", trademark chants of the revolution which ousted the United States' most important ally in the Middle East.

Chants of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" can commonly be heard in Iranian demonstrations of nationalist fervor, with this one being no exception.

"The United States does not have the courage to fire a single bullet at us despite all its defensive and military assets".

Soldiers, students, clerics and black-clad women holding small children thronged streets across Iran, many with portraits of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shi'ite cleric who toppled the Shah in an Islamic uprising that still haunts the West.

Current supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is set to publish "a detailed statement explaining the "second step" of the progress of the Islamic revolution", his official website said.

But despite the official festivities today's Islamic republic faces acute economic challenges as it struggles with a mix of domestic hardships and U.S. sanctions.

Last year, the government suppressed protests over poor living conditions in over 80 cities and towns.

Prices of food, especially meat, have risen a lot since U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran. Iranian leaders say they are protecting national interests.

In January, President Hassan Rouhani said his country was experiencing its worst economic crisis since the overthrow of the Shah.

In capital Tehran, demonstrators marched across different routes to reach the Azadi (Liberty) Square, where President Hassan Rouhani gave an address.

"The Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties but we will overcome the problems by helping each other", he said.

Another Iranian official warned that his country would destroy cities in Israel if the United States attacked Iran. "But if they attack us, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", Javani told the state news agency IRNA.

"At the revolution's 40 anniversary we are on top of scientific achievements like nanotechnology or accurate missiles", he said.

The remarks came a day after Trump tweeted about 40 years of "corruption, repression and terror", reacting to the 40th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution, which he claimed was followed by "the regime in Iran producing only 40 years of failure".
