Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he plans to put the Democrats' Green New Deal to a vote so "everyone can go on record and see how they feel about" the measures created to fight climate change. The goal is to transition the US economy away from burning fossil fuels and emitting greenhouse gasses blamed for climate change, rising sea levels and severe storms. Republicans have mocked it a progressive pipe dream that would drive the economy off a cliff and lead to a huge tax increase, calling it evidence of the creep of "socialism" in the party.

"I really don't like their policy of taking away your vehicle, of taking away your airplane rights", President Donald Trump said at a rally in El Paso, Texas, on Monday, referring to the memo. Sherrod Brown, pointedly declined Tuesday to attach his name and dismissed liberal activists' contention that he has to support the Green New Deal in order to prove his commitment to the issue.

Republicans have used the Green New Deal to try to sow discord within the Democratic party, painting their political rivals as shifting to the left and embracing extreme policies. And it's picking up momentum in the Senate, too, especially among White House contenders such as Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand.

The legislation, a sweeping package of climate-change measures unveiled by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, has drawn a tepid response from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who didn't explicitly throw her support behind the ideas. Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, who's likely to enter the Democratic primary soon, is also a supporter. In July 2017, Republicans forced a vote on a single-payer health care system. Rather than fall for the ploy, Democrats voted "present", except for red-state Democratic senators who voted no. The resolution urges elimination of fossil fuels pollution and greenhouse gas emissions "as much as technologically feasible" in a range of economic sectors and calls for "upgrading all existing buildings in the United States" to be energy-efficient.

In December, a poll from Yale and George Mason universities found that 81 percent of registered voters supported the goals of a Green New Deal, including 64 percent of Republicans and 57 percent of conservative Republicans.

After widespread ridicule, Ocasio-Cortez removed from her congressional website an FAQ summarizing the plan.

The resolution is expected to fail in the Senate.

"In a few short months the Green New Deal has become the vision for our future that most Americans want, and that terrifies the GOP", Ocasio-Cortez spokesman Corbin Trent said in a statement. "Even when it comes down to something like air travel ... that means the government is going to be telling people where they can fly to and where they can't".
