In a huge reversal, Disney is welcoming James Gunn back to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Deadline reports that, less than a year after he was sacked from the company following the resurfacing of offensive tweets from years prior, Gunn has been rehired as the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the franchise he launched back in 2014. The filmmaker will go into production on the movie after completing work on Suicide Squad 2. Horn reversed the decision after being persuaded by Gunn's public apology and how he handled the situation.

He was ousted when some of his old tweets related to pedophilia jokes were rediscovered by conservative personalities. Even though Gunn's tweets were years old and clearly jokes, however poor-taste, and were not about anyone real, Disney clearly felt it could not fire one and not the other, despite repeated calls to do so from Gunn supporters.

Deadline confirmed the news with Marvel and Gunn's reps.

James Gunn is getting a second chance.

"I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months".

Gunn added a thank you to Disney and said he was excited to "continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all". Early on after Gunn's dismissal, it was confirmed the studio planned to utilize Gunn's script - which had been turned in prior to his firing. "Love to you all". But in the wake of his firing, Gunn lined up DC's Suicide Squad 2 for rival Warner Bros.

Stars from the first two films shared their support for Gunn after his removal, including Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista, who claimed he wouldn't return unless Gunn was reinstated. "I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger".

With The Suicide Squad due on August 6, 2021, that should mean Guardians will probably not hit theaters until any earlier than 2023 at this stage.
