In the women's quarterfinals, Canada's 18-year-old Bianca Andreescu had an overwhelming 6-0, 6-1 victory over Spain's two-time Grand Slam victor Garbine Muguruza in 52 minutes to make her maiden Premier Mandatory semifinal.

Andreescu won the first nine games against Muguruza.

The top half was rocked by the upsets of top-ranked Novak Djokovic and No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev on Tuesday. "I was holding serve quite comfortably all day, Kyle came out and played a great last game".

Fourth-seeded Federer, seeking a record sixth Indian Wells title, next faces Britain's Kyle Edmund, a 6-3, 6-3 victor over Macedonian qualifier Radu Albot.

"I hope I can get there", Federer said, "but I'm not going to underestimate Hubert".

The top-seeded Serb, who had not dropped a set in four matches since the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January, looked out-of-sorts throughout the 98-minute contest.

Svitolina beat the Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the only other women's singles match of the day.

Three-time champion Rafael Nadal and five-time champion Roger Federer both earned a berth in the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Wednesday, one step away from another possible classic clash in the semis.

Kecmanovic became the first lucky loser to reach the last eight at Indian Wells since the ATP's Masters 1000 series launched in 1990.

Born in Canada, Andreescu first took up tennis at age 7 in Romania, where her parents worked.

Federer will face Hurkacz for the first time in the quarterfinals.

Though Nadal was not fully-satisfied with his performance in the match and said, "I probably played a little bit worse today than yesterday". "Maybe because of the conditions".

Federer, who can break out of a tie with Novak Djokovic with a record sixth title in the California desert, is on a collision course with three-time champion Nadal, who took on Russian Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals.

The 13th seed will square off against France's Gael Monfils, a 6-0 6-2 victor over Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
