"The great workforce at Lake Orion understands that today's announcement will provide over 400 new jobs for a General Motors product of the future built by UAW Local 5960 members for years to come right here in MI".

Trump's latest GM tweet on Monday said GM should: "Close a plant in China or Mexico, where you invested so heavily pre-Trump", and "Bring jobs home!"

The company said the moves are necessary to stay financially healthy as GM faces large capital expenditures to shift to electric and autonomous vehicles.

GM spokesman Dan Flores said the investment has been in the works for weeks. "This new Chevrolet electric vehicle is another positive step toward our commitment to an all-electric future".

The news comes at the end of a week that saw President Trump continually criticizing GM for closing a factory in OH while Ford revealed a $900 million plan that includes the manufacture of electric cars at its Flat Rock, Mich., plant.

The investment will go toward the production of another Chevrolet electric vehicle, which will be based on "an advanced version" of the Bolt EV's underpinnings.

The company says it will spend $300 million at its plant in Orion Township, Michigan, to manufacture a Chevrolet vehicle based on the battery-powered Bolt.

Reuters reported on Thursday on GM's investment plans for the plant.

President Trump has been calling for action in Lordstown, tweeting that he wants " jobs to stay in the United States of America and want Lordstown (Ohio), in one of the best economies in our history, opened or sold to a company who will open it up fast!

Last month, the company stopped building the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid hatchback, and in January company President Mark Reuss hinted that GM would not develop further hybrid or plug-in models.

"We already had 500 of those employees moved to other locations. The UAW will help", said the President during a campaign stop in Lima, Ohio Wednesday. It also comes ahead of what are expected to be contentious contract negotiations this year between the union and automaker.

The United Auto Workers won't be pacified easily. "GM is committed to supporting manufacturing, including in MI and OH".

The company made headlines recently by shuttering its Lordstown, Ohio plant. The state helped push him to victory in 2016, and Trump has focused on Lordstown, seldom mentioning the other USA factories that GM is slated to close.

Dittes said that even the sedan plant in Detroit-Hamtramck that GM has committed to keep open only until the end of 2019 has a shaky future.
