Leicester's first chance of the second half should have been the equaliser as Jamie Vardy was one-on-one with Martin Dubravka, but the Foxes' top scorer blazed over the bar from five-yards out. Benitez's contract expires at the end of the season and he has compared talks with controversial club owner Mike Ashley to Brexit negotiations.

Leicester now finish the season with games against West Ham, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea as they look to secure a seventh-place finish.

Despite being put under pressure in the latter stages of the game, Newcastle held firm to claim the points.

Perez nearly squeezed home the second goal for Newcastle with 14 minutes remaining after getting on the end of a loose ball at the near post but Schmeichel was alert to make the save this time.
