Sanders: Sending migrants to sanctuary cities not top choice

Responding to those questions, the president tweeted on Saturday that the US government "has the absolute legal right to have apprehended illegal immigrants transferred to Sanctuary Cities".

Pelosi was among Democrats who had criticized Trump over the tweet, with some accusing him of trying to incite violence against the Muslim lawmaker who has already seen one upstate NY man face criminal charges for making death threats against her.

Sanders made the comment in an interview on Sunday, but also said it certainly wouldn't be the administration's first choice.

"In California, the governor wants to have a lot of people coming in, refugees coming in, a lot of sanctuary cities, so we'll give them to the sanctuary cities maybe to take care of if it's that the way we want it", he said during an event at the White House.

And Elizabeth Warren, another presidential contender, said: "The President is inciting violence against a sitting congresswoman - and an entire group of Americans based on their religion".

Omar's description of the 9/11 attack as "some people did something" drew widespread condemnation including from Republican lawmakers, who said her remarks minimized the 9/11 attacks.

She added, "I find what her comments to be absolutely disgraceful and unbefitting of a member of Congress and I think that it's a good thing that the president is calling her our for those comments".

Storms expected to rattle through the Brazos Valley Saturday
A storm system with heavy rain moved through the Dallas-Fort Worth area Saturday morning , April 6, 2019. Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms before 10am, then a slight chance of showers between 10am and 1pm.

Pelosi took time out from an official trip to issue a strong statement urging Trump to take the clip down.

"They will continue to monitor and address the threats she faces", the speaker said. This was couched heavily in denials that Trump had done anything illegal, no doubt because Sanders herself suspects that Trump's blanket denial such a conversation happened is a likely non-starter, but she hedged on both.

Nadler's comment came in response to a report from CNN that Trump told then-head of the Customs and Border Protection agency that he would pardon him if he faced jail for denying entry to migrants. Some also noted their past disagreements with her. Spliced in between her words were dramatic scenes from 9/11.

"One of the biggest things that I think people aren't seeing is the fact that the only reason that the Oversight Committee has the ability to request someone's taxes are for the objective of determining policy", Sanders said, responding to the last "lightening round" question from Wallace.

A spokesman for Omar told the paper that she misspoke and meant to say the organisation's size had doubled after the attacks.

Omar repeatedly has pushed fellow Democrats into uncomfortable territory with criticism of Israel and the strength of the Jewish state's influence in Washington. Jerry Nadler of NY, said on CNN's State of the Union. "The issue is, I feel a responsibility that we get this right and the IRS does not become weaponized like it was under the Nixon administration".
