"They are telling us you can not keep family units who come here illegally and unlawfully at the southern border".

Trump earlier tweeted that relocating undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities would make the "radical left" happy. This has nothing to do with whether or not they are going to determine policy.

Trump is accusing Democrats of failing to overhaul immigration law. He also purged his homeland security chief. He told Mr McAleenan he would pardon him if he were to find himself in trouble for blocking legal asylum-seekers, according to two people familiar with the conversation who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe a private exchange.

The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., questioned the legality of the proposal.

US President Donald Trump's tax returns must be given to House Democrats by 23 April, a committee chair has said. "These are human beings, not game pieces", the official said.

Families being held at the border are already going through a hard process and for them to be dropped off wherever the Trump administration wants is "incredibly inappropriate and really dehumanizing", Garza said. This is a clearly political move for the president.

Sanders said, "The president has been clear from the beginning". "The idea was again considered in February, amid the standoff with Congress over a border wall". However, CNN and the Post both reported that the DHS and White House denied the proposal was still under consideration - before Trump revived it on Friday. "They never call to check for truth".

Trump and his aides discussed reinstating family separations, too, but Trump later said it wasn't happening.

The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University announced last week that an analysis found that immigrants in sanctuary cities are 20% less likely to be arrested out in the community than in cities without such policies. ICE's enforcement and removal operations have sometimes ensnared people who have been in the US for decades, working and raising families. Cohen said the president feared that releasing his returns could lead to an audit and IRS tax penalties.

In response, some cities have banished ICE from jails where agents could easily pick up immigration violators.

That letter came on the heels of another one sent in November in which the Justice Department requested more information about the city and county's immigration compliance, threatening to withhold Byrne justice assistance grants which help fund state law enforcement initiatives, training and equipment, among other things.

Flights chartered by ICE cost about $7,785 U.S. per flight hour, according to the agency. The agency also uses commercial flights but requires that migrants to pay for those.
