5 suspects detained in Ortiz shooting; 1 at large

The Dominican Republic's chief prosecutor Jean Alain Rodriguez Sanchez spoke at a news conference on Wednesday.

After two surgeries, Ortiz continues to recover at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was flown to Boston late Monday night and has been "making good progress" in his recovery, according to his wife Tiffany Ortiz.

The Boston Red Sox released a statement on behalf of the 43-year-old's wife Tiffany. The gunman has not been arrested, and police say they do not yet have a motive.

Among the suspects in custody is the alleged shooter, identified by authorities as Rolfy Ferreyra, aka Sandy.

The Dominican Republic is one of the world's most unsafe countries.

The Dominican newspaper Listin Diario, citing law enforcement officials, has reported that Garcia and the gunman allegedly plotted the shooting with other people who were in two Hyundai vehicles one street away from the Dial Bar and Lounge, where Ortiz was at the time of the attack. A sixth suspect, identified as Luis Alfredo Rivas Clases, remained at large Wednesday. "We guarantee to all Dominicans and to the world that justice will be done".

Doctors treated her for pain and vomiting, she told CBS . "I was miserable", she told the NewYork Daily News . "I was vomiting. Just as Tommy Tickenoff was gaining a wife in the island country, his mother was losing her husband of 10 years.

Two others were wounded in the attack, including television host Jhoel Lopez, who was seated with Ortiz and who was struck in the leg by the same bullet that hit Ortiz.

The driver of the motorcycle, Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia, was apprehended and beaten by bystanders after the motorcycle faltered. Prosecutors confirmed that Acosta was captured Tuesday night.

The gunman ambushed the slugger while he was at a nightclub in his native Santo Domingo.

According to Dominican Chief of Police Ney A. Bautista, "several individuals" were paid less than the equivalent of $8,000 to carry out the act, and an alleged shooter has been arrested.

Dominican prosecutors said in a court document that one of the suspects, Oliver Moises Mirabal Acosta, was seen driving the Accent before mounting a motorcycle driven by 25-year-old Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia.
