David Ortiz alert, smiling after second surgery in Boston

The Red Sox issued a statement early Tuesday morning: "Late last night we were made aware of an incident involving David Ortiz in the Dominican Republic".

Once doctors had stabilized him he was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he underwent a second surgery. She also thanked the Red Sox organization and Ortiz's fans for their outpouring of support.

Meanwhile, Lopez, a close friend of Ortiz's who acts as both a spokesperson and personal media assistant, told Rivera that the 43-year-old "even flashed that smile" while in hospital.

David Ortiz's wife has finally broken her silence on the senseless shooting of her husband in the Dominican Republic over the weekend.

The gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar, and police were waiting for him to undergo treatment for his injuries before questioning him, authorities said.

Ortiz spokesman Leo Lopez told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Ortiz is expected to stay in intensive care for at least 48 hours. The bullet is believed to have hit Ortiz in his lower back and passed through his body.

Ortiz's father, Leo, said he had no idea why someone would have shot at his son. But the gunman has not been arrested, and investigators were trying to establish whether Ortiz was the target.

The Boston legend was transported from the Dominican Republic to Massachusetts General Hospital with help from the Red Sox organization. Ortiz maintains a home in Weston, on the outskirts of Boston.
